Was it a Powerbook? Catching fire when gaming is a design feature to ensure that Mac users who try to game never breed.

Regardless, this doesn't mean that laptops are unsuitable for gaming...

When is my Dell XPS M1730 going to catch fire? Core 2 Extreme processor and GeForce 8800GTX w/SLI. With all that horsepower in a laptop you'd think it would have burnt up by now.

The processor gets up to 58 degrees under heavy load and idles at 38. The GPUs get up to 78 under heavy load. Perfectly fine temps...

The chance of a properly cooled laptop overheating are the same as a desktop properly cooled. It's properly cooled after all . Now the chances of dust restricting airflow to a critical level is higher for a laptop obviously. The chance of bedsheets/couch/lap or w/e might restrict airflow causing overheating is also higher for a laptop. Same with the chance of getting a laptop with poor cooling design.
